Monthly Checklist: May

Lawn Care

In addition to keeping an eye on weeds, begin looking for fungal issues. Like weeds, they’re easier to treat when they’re caught early.

  • Infuse Fungicide should be applied at the first sign of lawn fungus to treat it and prevent it from spreading.
  • Eight Insect Control kills multiple ground insects like armyworms, grubs, fleas, and ticks.
  • Jonathan Weed & Feed controls broadleaf weeds while fertilizing your grass.

Insect & Disease Control

The best way to control pests and diseases is to catch them as soon as possible. Check plants regularly, especially those that have had problems in the past, and treat them as soon as any problems are noticed. Avoid spraying insect controls on plants that are actively blooming whenever possible so pollinators aren’t sprayed by accident.

  • Neem Oil is an organic triple action, perfect for the control of diseases and insects on your veggies, herbs, and fruits.
  • With the warmer temperatures and higher humidity, fungal issues will be popping up. Copper Fungicide works quickly at controlling fungal diseases like powdery mildew, rust, leaf curl, and more.
  • Rose Shield protects your plants against fungi, insects, and mites. Best used on ornamental trees, shrubs, and perennials.
  • Protect plants for up to 6 weeks with RoseRx, a systemic insect and fungal control applied to the soil.
  • Eight Insect Control kills multiple types of insects on multiple plants.
  • Japanese Beetles tend to start showing up in June so be sure to set out Japanese Beetle Traps to lure them away from your favorite plants before they arrive. Always set your traps in an area away from your desirable plants.

Garden Beds

Prep your beds for planting (or maintain the beauty of existing beds).

  • Lobster Compost should be used when planting trees, shrubs, and perennials to improve your soil and add nutrients. You can also topdress soil to amend entire garden beds.
  • Preen prevents weeds in your garden beds so you aren’t spending your summer hand-pulling them out later. Don’t use Preen if you are planning to start seeds directly in the ground.
  • Mulch helps keep the soil moist and smothers weeds.

Fertilizers

Follow your label instructions on how often to apply your fertilizers throughout the growing season.

  • Plant Tone is an all-purpose fertilizer for all your plant needs.
  • Garden Tone gives newly planted herbs and veggies a boost while encouraging healthy plants and large yields.
  • Feed flowering plants and fruiting plants with Flower Tone.
  • Bulb Tone to feed your newly planted summer bulbs.
  • Palm Tone for your tropical plants like hibiscus, palms, and mandevilla.
  • Feed citrus and avocado plants with Citrus Tone.
  • Use Dynamite Slow-Release Fertilizer once when you plant and then sit back and relax while it feeds annuals, perennials, and veggies for up to 9 months!

Pond Care

Your pond is now awake and roaring to go. Pond plants should be arriving soon too!

  • Kill algae quickly with AlgaeFix. It also works in fountains.
  • Simply Clear clarifies murky water with natural bacteria.
  • Use Chlorine & Heavy Metal Neutralizer for use whenever you add water to your pond to remove harsh chemicals and metals.
  • Microbe-Lift adds beneficial bacteria to improve the conditions of your pond by removing pollutants.
  • Once water temperatures are consistently above 60° you can begin feeding your fish with Koi Vibrance Fish Food.

Miscellaneous

  • Ready-to-use Coast of Maine Raised Bed Soil eliminates the need to make your own. Use it whenever you’re starting a new bed or to refresh an existing one. Also works great in outdoor containers!
  • Coast of Maine Potting Soil is perfect for indoor containers, outdoor containers, and hanging baskets.
  • Fertilome Root Stimulant to encourage new root development and prevent transplant shock in new plantings.
  • Vole Bags are mesh bags that go around the root system of new plants to prevent hungry voles from chowing down.
