Ken started his business from his home in Hampton in 1972 before moving to a little office on a side road off of Route 17 in Yorktown (back then it was called Grafton). He had a small crew and set out in a pickup truck with his dog and sold work to residents of the Peninsula in need of help in the yard.

He and his crew were a mighty force and the business grew, soon his location was too small. Good thing he had purchased a piece of property directly on Route 17 some years earlier, which is where Ken Matthews Garden Center still stands today!

During this time, Ken needed some help. Enter Heather Klose (formerly Ewing) in March of 1990, fresh out of college with a Fine Arts degree…and no job. Luckily, she attended the same church as the Matthews family growing up and while in high school and college worked for Ken mowing grass on weekends and breaks from school. That’s how Heather’s garden career started. Her love of the outdoors and physical work, plus her art background has made this the perfect relationship. Today, she is Ken’s business partner and senior designer.

Ken has since lost his dog and that first pickup truck, but he has created a successful and thriving business creating beauty in York County and the surrounding areas. This year he will celebrate 50 years of being in the garden business! That’s quite the accomplishment.
