Monthly Checklist: September

Lawn

There’s still plenty of time to get your lawn renovated for fall seeding. Click here for our Lawn Renovation Guide. Keep in mind the time limits you must wait before seeding after applying chemicals vary from chemical to chemical. Always read your label!

  • KleenUp is a nonselective herbicide that kills weeds within just a few days and is out of your soil in 7 to 10 days. It can be used to spot-treat problem areas or kill off your entire lawn to start fresh.
  • Check your soil’s pH with pH Test Strips. Grasses prefer a pH between 6.2 and 7.0.
  • If your pH is too low, apply Ma-I-Cal. One application raises your pH by approximately one point.
  • Ken Matthews Blend Fescue Seed is a custom fescue blend based on the recommendations from Virginia Tech and is blended especially for the Hampton Roads area.
  • Apply Jonathan Green New Seeding Fertilizer for newly seeded and overseeded lawns.

Insect & Disease Control

Continue to keep an eye on temperatures, most chemicals have temperature limits and should not be sprayed in temperatures above that limit. Thankfully temperatures should start to drop soon.

  • Because it’s Organic, Neem Oil is perfect for controlling disease and insects on your veggies, herbs, and fruits.
  • Rose Shield protects your plants against fungus, insects, and mites. Best used on ornamental trees, shrubs, and perennials.
  • Quickly control fungal diseases like powdery mildew, rust, leaf curl, and more with Copper Fungicide.
  • Protect plants for up to 6 weeks with RoseRx, a systemic control applied to the soil.
  • Eight Insectic Control kills multiple types of insects.

Garden Beds

Get ready for fall planting!

  • Add organic matter and amend clay or sandy soils with Lobster Compost.
  • Apply Preen to garden beds to prevent weeds. Don’t use it if you’re planning on starting seeds directly in the ground.
  • Mulch your garden beds and around trees and shrubs. Not only does mulch make your garden look tidier, but it also helps soil retain moisture, aids in the prevention of weeds, and will insulate plant roots over the winter.

Fertilizers

Remember to thoroughly read your label to know how often you need to fertilize. September is usually the last time you will fertilize most trees, shrubs, and perennials until next spring.

  • Fertilome Tree & Shrub Fertilizer is a great all-purpose fertilizer for all trees and shrubs.
  • Apply a half application of Holly Tone to acid-loving plants.
  • Plant Tone is perfect for all your plant needs.
  • Start your cool season veggies with Garden Tone to encourage healthy plants and large yields.
  • Bulb Tone feeds your newly planted spring-blooming bulbs.
  • Feed your flowering plants with Flower Tone.
  • Use Dynamite Slow-Release Fertilizer once when you plant and then sit back and relax while it fertilizes for up to 9 months!

Pond Care

As summer winds down, continue your efforts to keep algae at bay.

  • Quickly kill of algae with AlgaeFix in both ponds and fountains.
  • Simply Clear clarifies murky water with natural bacteria.
  • Add beneficial bacteria with Microbe-Lift to improve the conditions of your pond by removing pollutants.
  • Whenever you add fresh water to your pond, use Chlorine and Heavy Metal Neutralizer to remove harmful chemicals from it.
  • Feed your fish Koi Vibrance Fish Food. Hungry Koi are known to nibble on plant matter, so keep them fed and keep your plants uneaten!

Miscellaneous

  • Fill new raised beds (or refresh existing ones) with Coast of Maine Raised Bed Soil. It works great in containers too.
  • Coast of Maine Potting Soil is perfect for indoor containers, outdoor containers, and hanging baskets.
  • Use Fertilome Root Stimulant to encourage new root development and to prevent transplant shock in new plantings.
  • Protect new plants with Vole Bags, mesh bags that go around the roots of plants to prevent hungry voles from munching them.
