August Gardening Tips

  • Lawns scheduled for renovation this fall should be killed with Bonide Kleen-Up now.  Bonide Kleen-Up is 41% stronger than Roundup.
  • Have soil tested to determine pH needs.
  • Plan now for fall garden renovations or shrub additions.  Need design ideas – sign up for a landscape consultation!
  • Soak shrubs periodically during dry spells with enough water to moisten the soil to a depth of 8-10 inches.  Grab a bubbler hose attachment at the garden center. It waters slow and soft. Just what your plants need.
  • Check that your mulch hasn’t decomposed and add more as needed – no more than 3” deep and never touching the bark of the plant.
  • Check your plants for any diseases and pests and treat when necessary. Need help with selecting the correct chemical?  We’re here to help.
  • Prepare soil for fall garden plantings. Clean up all debris. Mix soil with our organic Coast of Maine Lobster Compost.
  • Start seeds for beans, beets, spinach, lettuce, radishes, and turnips, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, and kale to set out in September.
  • Continue to remove spent blooms and cut back overgrown bedding plants.
  • Take pictures of your garden at peak. Also, take pictures of container combinations you’d like to repeat
