November 2014 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Garden Therapy for Wounded Warriors
The Natural Recovery Program at the Hampton Veterans' Administration Hospital is a healing element used to improve the lives of wounded warriors whose beings have been disrupted by illness and injury. A part of the Natural Recovery Program is the Horticultural Therapy Program. Horticultural Therapy uses live plants and gardening activities to help service members and veterans cope with mental and physical changes that have occurred, oftentimes unexpectedly, in their lives. Participants in the Horticultural Therapy Program are involved in the creation, design, and maintenance of both floral and vegetable gardens. Projects include endeavors such as starting seedlings in the fall and winter in cold frames and then transplanting them to gardens on hospital grounds. The many activities are fashioned to highlight the benefits of gardening to include cognitive, occupational, physical, and spiritual development. Service members and veterans taking part in the program often express the sense of pride they feel when they see the results of their work. Additionally, staff, patients, and visitors of the hospital are able to enjoy the beauty the many gardens bring to the facility grounds. The Horticultural Therapy Program at the Veterans' Hospital is led by a trained hospital staff member and supported by American Red Cross volunteers. Additionally, the American Red Cross backs the program by procuring the bulk of supplies and materials needed to facilitate the activities. The organization is extremely grateful to businesses for donations which help to keep the program operational. The Aristocrat of the Southern Garden
Camellia sasanquas are synonymous with southern gardens-thus crowned the title of "Aristocrat." Truly a "perfect" plant in a gardeners' eyes as they are virtually pest free, hold their dark green shiny leaves year round and range in a multitude of sizes. Depending on the variety they bloom all shades of reds, pinks and whites with either single, semi double or double blooms.
Being fall bloomers, sasanquas provide color in the garden when little else is in blossom. Late blooming varieties like "Yuletide" provide color during the holidays, hence it's name.
If your garden is without a camellia sasanqua, add one today. After all, every southern garden needs an "Aristocrat". ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bonide All Seasons Spray Oil
One method of controlling a wide variety of garden pests and diseases in cooler weather is by coating plants with a heavy oil. Bonide All Seasons Spray Oil is such a product. Derived from paraffin, the oil coats eggs, larvae and insects and fungal diseases and smothers them. The spray can be used on dormant plants and during the growing season, as long as temperatures are below 80°Fand above freezing. Bonide All Seasons Spray Oil is recommended for use on fruit trees, evergreens and is safe for vegetable plants as well as ornamentals and roses. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tips for the Garden: * Fall is a great time to plant trees, shrubs, bulbs, perennials, fescue grass seed and sod. Plants that are planted in the fall enjoy cooler temperatures and ideal growing conditions that allow roots ample time to grow into the surrounding soil. Be sure to use Bumper Crop and Root Master at the time of planting. * Plants and trees that provide color and interest in the month of November include Camellia, Nandina, Pyracantha, Red Twig Dogwood, Birches, Coral Bark Maple, Harry Lauder's Walking Stick and ornamental grasses. * November is a great time to fertilize your fescue lawn. We recommend using Jonathan Green Winter Survival. * It is time to feed your plants with a good quality slow release plant food. We recommend fertilizing shrubs and ornamental trees with Florikan. This custom blended plant food contains slow-release nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and micro-nutrients for overall plant growth and development. * Install spring blooming bulbs, such as tulips, crocus, and daffodils now and then enjoy their glorious spring color. * Treat house plants with a granular systemic insecticide like Bonide Houseplant Insect Control before bringing inside for the winter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
