Celebrate National Perennial Month

June is the declared national perennial month...and it's no wonder.

More perennial varieties are in bloom and available in June than any other month
 of the year.

Early Spring blooming perennials are still going strong while late spring and early
summer perennials are budded and ready to bloom. If you haven't experienced the
perennial world of color...now's the time to dive in.

Here's how.

* For the enthusiast - expand a garden bed. Lay out your garden hose and simply
add on to an existing bed. Kill the grass with Round up in the area you want to
plant, wait till it dies, add your soil, and plant a mixed border such as Shasta
Daisies in the back, Daylilies in the middle, and Coreopsis along the edge for
an area with full sun.

* For the 'start small - go big later' - add perennials here and there in existing
garden beds. One of this, three of that. Keep like colors and varieties together
for better impact.

Not only do perennials offer stunning summer color, they also attract Butterflies,
Hummingbirds and tons of Bees that help pollinate farm crops, fruiting trees and
shrubs and blooming plants that keep our own gardens healthy.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once quoted "The earth laughs in flowers". By adding perennials
to your piece of earth -your garden, it won't be long before you will share in that
laughter!

Daylilies:
Day Beauty

What draws people to daylilies? One answer is their diversity of color and bloom
shape. The botanical name for daylilies, Hemerocallis, is derived from two Greek
words, hemera meaning "day," and kallos, "beauty."

These perennials more than live up to their name. A good-sized plant can produce
hundreds of blossoms over a period of several weeks. Some are fragrant, others repeat
bloom for color all summer. They will grow in ordinary garden soil and are not
fussy about pH.

Daylilies are sun-lovers. With over 38,000 cultivars, you are sure to find daylilies
suitable for your own garden.

Ferns: Indispensable for Shady Areas

These delicate plants make the hottest summer day seem cooler. Ferns are the most
ornamental of foliage plants, and their diversity guarantees that every shade garden
can make good use of them.
Most Ferns are slow growers taking several years to reach their mature size. Ferns
require little care and will thrive in many locations that would discourage fussier
plants. They are deer-resistant and especially great for the woodland garden since
most ferns appreciate afternoon shade.

Tips for the Garden:

June Gardening Tips

* June is a great time to plant annuals, perennials and all trees and shrubs. Ken
Matthews Garden Center has many beautiful annuals to choose from, including geraniums,
impatiens, marigolds, petunias, vinca, salvia and many other plants. Perennials
that provide interest in the month of June include Daylilies, Astilbe, Rudbeckia,
Yarrow, Foxglove and much more.
* We recommend fertilizing annuals, perennials and flowering shrubs and trees with
Dr. EarthRose and Flower Fertilizer. Check all plants, especially newly planted
ones, for water on a regular basis. Water deeply and thoroughly as needed.
* Now is a great time to install a water garden. The experts at Ken Matthews Garden
Center can design and build creative water features that will allow you to enjoy
the soothing sights and sounds of water.
* Spruce up your summer landscape with beautiful color in containers. Our staff
can assist you in selecting combinations of annuals, perennials and shrubs that
work wonderfully together. We have a tremendous selection of window boxes, hanging
baskets and planters. Be sure to use Gardeners Gold Potting Mix when planting and
a water-holding granular such as Soil Moist to reduce the frequency of watering.Pest
Controls

* Various pest problems can occur in June. If you have plants that you suspect may
be facing a pest problem, bring in a representative sample to the garden center
and speak with one of our plant specialists. We will diagnose the problem and recommend
the appropriate control. Listed below are some of the problems that can appear this
month along with the proper controls.
* Spray Rose Shield on roses to control insect and disease problems.
* Spray for bagworms on Arborvitae and other evergreens with Thuricide.
* Watch for mildew in Roses, Dogwoods, Lilacs, Crape Myrtles and perennials. Cure
and prevent fungus/disease by spraying with a systemic fungicide like Infuse.
* Lacebugs and Spider mites can be controlled using Bonide Systemic Insect Control
orBayer Advanced 3 in 1 Insect, Disease and Mite Control.
* To control deer, rabbits, and other animals that are getting into your garden,
try a repellent such as Plantskydd or Liquid Fence, which is labeled for that particular
pest.Fruit and Vegetable Gardens

* Fertilize fruits and vegetables with a good quality, slow-release vegetable food
such as Dr. Earth Organic fertilizers.
* Time to stake tomatoes and spray them if necessary to prevent disease problems.
* In mid to late June, you can control borers in squash, cucumbers and melons by
 applying Bonide Eight Insecticide.Lawns

* June is the time to apply a fungicide to the lawn to control turf diseases such
as brown patch, dollar spot and others. Use Infuse Systemic Fungicide.
* Fertilize and kill weeds in warm season lawns.
* If needed, apply a weed control to the lawn to kill actively growing weeds. Use
Bonide Weed Beater or Jonathan Green Weed Control. Tips on applying weed killer:

* Always follow the label directions.
* Do not apply weed controls on newly seeded areas.
* Do not apply weed controls on windy days.
* Do not apply weed controls near or on the edge of waterways.
* Do not allow children or pets to play on lawns freshly applied with weed controls.
It is best to wait one week.
* Do not apply weed controls when temperatures are above 85 degrees F. House Plants

* You can move houseplants outside to the deck or patio and enjoy them outdoors
for the summer. It is best to gradually introduce them to more direct sunlight to
prevent the leaves from being burned.
* Feed houseplants with a good quality indoor plant food such as Bonide 10-10-10
 Houseplant Fertilizer
* If needed, re-pot root bound houseplants to a larger pot. Ken Matthews Garden
Center stocks a full line of containers, including terra cotta, wood, concrete,
ceramic and plastic. Use EspomaOrganic Soil when repotting houseplants.
* Hibiscus, Jasmine, Oleander and Mandeville are just some of the flowering tropical
plants you can add to your deck, patio or balcony.
