Celebrate Autumn

Fall is the perfect time of year. The days and evenings are becoming cooler. Foliage is beginning to change to amazing reds, golds and oranges before falling to earth. Best of all it's the start of "the seasons"... candy corn, pumpkins, mums and goblins, turkey and pumpkin pie, Christmas trees, decorations and beautiful wreaths.

This is a nostalgic time of year. These goodies take me back to my childhood. I grew up in southern California- back in the day when yards were an event all their own. When Halloween arrived, scary monsters would be added to decorations since children could safely roam neighborhoods. I still remember running home, emptying buckets full of candy and going back out to refill them. Now I'm enjoying this with my grandchildren. Even we grownups are still kids at heart!

Working at Ken Matthews Garden Center has opened a new view of fall for me... lettuces and fall veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, beets, and kale reward us with rich bounty as "the seasons" continue. I look forward to mouth watering dishes prepared from harvesting the garden. It still amazes me that the pumpkins we decorate with can be prepared into the tasty treats we enjoy the remainder of the "seasons."
So enjoy the colors and the cooler temperatures as you gradually move through "the seasons." After all, it's the perfect time of year!

Ninebark Diablo is all the rage!

Ninebark Diablo has numerous virtues. Its purple red leaves provide color spring through fall. Its beautiful peeling bark (hence its common name) on stems reveals contrasting inner bark in shades of red to tan in winter. The flowers provide nectar for butterflies, the seeds are loved by birds and the stems provide nesting sites.
Ninebark tolerates a wide range of soil conditions. It has no particular pest or disease problems which explain its long and successful life. The shrub is hardy to Zone 3. Full sun to part shade isfine, but the colored-leaf varieties develop their brightest tones in sunny locations.

The little flowers, which appear in early to midsummer, are white to soft pink, held together in clusters. Ninebark produces flowers on old wood from the previous season, followed by dangling clusters of reddish brown seed capsules that are attractive in late summer and into autumn.

Ninebark also makes a nice informal hedge. When left alone, it will grow into a medium to large shrub. The only care it needs is to remove dead wood, or to thin out a quarter of the stems each year in the winter or spring, right down to the base, to maintain a bushy habit. This rejuvenates the plant and encourages the production of flowers and fruit.

Ninebark also responds well to being cut back by half every few years in order to keep it in check, particularly if used in a foundation planting. This should be done right after flowering, so the shrub has time to form new buds for the following season.

Tips for the Garden:

*Pansies:begin planting these happy flowers in your beds to help roots become established before colder weather sets in
*October is a great time to Mag-i-cal (lime), seed and fertilize your lawn to make it thicker and healthier.
*Don't allow leaves to accumulate on your lawn and become matted down by rain. The accumulation of leaves may kill the grass.
*Dig,divide and replant overcrowded perennials that have finished blooming
*Time to bring houseplants back indoors if you haven't already. If needed, spray them first with Bonide Insecticidal Soap. You can dust the soil with Bonide Houseplant Systemic Insecticide to prevent bringing in fungus gnats. Repot root bound plants with Gardners Gold, an organic potting soil.
