Autumn Excitement

I LOVE summer! I love the beach, the pool and all the outdoor water activities that go along with the hot, humid Virginia weather.  So each year as the temperatures start to dwindle I wonder why I am so happy.  Maybe I love fall a little bit more than summer!  The mornings are cool and crisp and as I take my puppy, Pepper, for a walk, I think about the activities of the day ahead of me.  I start to feel excited about getting to work to see all the new fall items coming into the garden center.  I handle the incoming deliveries of product so I get to see everything before it is put out for sale.  After all the mums, pansies, pumpkins, and tons of other fall decorating items are in place, you can find me giving my opinion on all the fall displays. At the end of the day, I’m inspired to use all the creative ideas I’ve learned to decorate my own home for the upcoming holidays that will be spent being thankful for another year with family, friends and my KMGC family.

Queen of the Southern Garden

Sasanqua Camellia, the Queen of the Southern Garden, has stunning blooms which brighten fall and winter days.  The flowers come in pink, red or white and all sizes, shades and shapes.  However, its dark, glossy, green leaves make this plant an appealing shrub even when not in bloom. Sasanqua Camellias come in such varied sizes that it is easy to find one to suit any area of a semi-shady landscape.  This shrub makes a great memorial shrub.

Bonide All Seasons Spray Oil

One method of controlling a wide variety of garden pests and diseases in cooler weather is by coating plants with a heavy oil. Bonide All Seasons Spray Oil is such a product. Derived from paraffin, the oil coats eggs, larvae and insects and fungal diseases and smothers them. The spray can be used on dormant plants and during the growing season, as long as temperatures are below 80°F. Bonide All Seasons Spray Oil is recommended for use on fruit trees, evergreens and is safe for vegetable plants as well as ornamentals and roses.

Tips for the Garden

  • Plant pansies now in flower beds and containers gardens for colorful smiles all winter long.  For a spring surprise, add spring blooming bulbs like tulips and daffodils!
  • Apply the last round of Jonathan Green Winter Survival Lawn Fertilizer.
  • Spray your shrubs with Bonide All Seasons Oil to kill late fall insects.
  • Fertilize your shrubs with Holly Tone.
  • Before bringing house plants in doors, use Bonide Insecticidal Soap to kill any insects that are living on leaves or in the roots.
  • Apply mulch to your gardens if your mulch is thin – this will help insulate your plants against cold temperatures this winter.
