A Peaceful Time to Observe, Reflect, & Plan Your Yard
After the new year, when the Holiday season draws to a close, I take advantage of this time to step back and look at how my plants are doing.
I enjoy walking through my winter garden as I find it very relaxing. My Mom taught me not only to enjoy the slow stroll through the garden, but also to start getting the ‘gears’ turning on what needs to be done. I cherish this time I have in the winter garden – alone – during the quietest month of the year.

I also learned from my mom to look at my yard as a whole, then develop my overall plan for improvement. I find myself asking “Am I happy with the way things are? What could be done differently?”. I even do a little “dreaming”.

I now look at my own garden as evolving… never completely done. Even my husband has learned to accept this way of contemplation. I walk the garden, I dream a little, and then start a plan for the year.

This year, it may be a stone boarder, a new bench, or maybe adding color with a few new plants!

Let Your Garden Go to the Birds this Winter.

Feeding and watching these melodic feathered friends provides relaxation, entertainment, and an opportunity to interact with the wild in our own backyards! Some helpful tips to keep our feathered friends around during winter weather are:

  • Keep feeders full and clean
  • Have a clean/fresh water source available-birdbath heaters are handy during long freezes
  • Provide suet cakes and dried mealworms.
  • Place birdhouses away from feeders and out of reach of prey.
